Engine Starts Hard

  • Air is in the fuel
  • Engine is not getting fuel

  • Engine cranks too slow (min 150 RPM)
  • Injector(s) are worn or malfunctioning
  • Injection pump is malfunctioning
  • Engine has low compression

Engine Will Not Start (No Exhaust Smoke)

  • Air is in the fuel
  • Engine is not getting fuel
  • Injection pump is malfunctioning
  • Injection pump shut-off is malfunctioning
  • Injector(s) are worn or malfunctioning
  • Engine has no compression

Engine Has Low Power

  • Air intake or exhaust system is leaking (turbo engines only)
  • Air intake or exhaust system is restricted
  • Engine is out of time
  • Fuel filter is plugged
  • Fuel supply is restricted
  • Injection pump is malfunctioning
  • Injector(s) are worn or malfunctioning
  • Turbocharger is worn or malfunctioning
  • Shut-off lever not fully in run position

Engine Has Black Smoke

  • Air intake or exhaust system is restricted
  • Air intake or exhaust is leaking (turbo engines only)
  • Injection pump is malfunctioning
  • Injector(s) are worn or malfunctioning
  • Turbocharger is worn or malfunctioning

Engine Has White Smoke

  • Engine has low compression (starts hard cold)
  • Engine is out of time
  • Fuel quality is poor (possibly mixed with gasoline)
  • Leaking coolant into the combustion chamber
  • Injection pump is malfunctioning
  • Injector(s) are worn or malfunctioning
  • Turbocharger worn or malfunctioning

Gets Fuel in the Motor Oil

  • Engine valve train malfunction
  • Failed supply pump
  • Injector(s) are worn or malfunctioning
  • Injection pump seals are leaking
